Video produced for Northern Irish sports event company, ’26extreme’. The Causeway Coast Marathon is an annual off-road running event held on the North Coast of Northern Ireland with 10km, 1/2, full, and Ultra marathon distances.

Shooting events like this are defineitely tough going.  An early start at 6/7am, and a day of chasing after some fast runners. I had the luxury of my van to follow the pack but it’s surprising how much ground the competitors travel in such a short space of time.  I don’t know how the Ultra Marathon runners do it.

The Giant’s Causeway Coast marathon is definitely one of the most scenic runs in the world, so it was easy to get stunning looking landscape shots. The route actually goes past the famous Giant’s Causeway as well as well as many other lesser known spots along the North Antrim coast line.

In terms of kit, I used my trusty Canon 7D along with a Sony HX9V.  The Sony Hx9v is a recent addition to my kit.  It’s a compact camera that shoots 1080 50p with surprisingly good results.  It was so handy to have a camera like this that I could just mount on a monopod and quickly run X-country style to spots inaccessible by car.  Without it I wouldn’t have been able to get some of the shots.

The video was all cut in FCPX which is an ideal tool for this type of edit.  Having built-in tools like stabilisation / rolling shutter really helps out with the Merlin Steadicam shots.

The interview style was something I came up with during the early morning drive up the road.  I wanted to put together something different in some way.  I was happy with the way it worked, but it also meant that there were no clips to sync! The audio was recorded on a Zoom H4N with the built in mic.
